Gannets (dt. "Basstölpel") are fascinating seabirds, known for their distinctive appearance and remarkable behaviors. They are truly special birds, notable for their dramatic diving skills, striking appearance, and complex social behaviors. Their presence in coastal environments adds a significant element to the marine ecosystem.
Appearance: Gannets are large seabirds with predominantly white plumage, which gives them a striking appearance. They have black wingtips and a pale blue-grey bill. One of their most notable features is the bright blue skin around their eyes, which contrasts sharply with their pale plumage.
Gannets are known for their extraordinary diving skills. They can dive from heights of 30 meters (100 feet) or more, plunging into the sea at high speeds to catch fish. When they dive, they streamline their bodies to reduce impact, allowing them to enter the water with minimal splash.
